The current owner had the building “carefully conserved” in order to preserve its old-world charm.
This means that the entrance door, the old floor tiles, and even the exposed
brickwork in the façade are intentional features, not signs of neglect—a conscious choice
to ensure that the building’s authentic history remains visible.
The building dates back to the Gründerzeit era, specifically between 1886 and 1888.
In days gone by, it was home to workers, artists, and intellectuals—the very people who
shaped Berlin.
Despite its historic architecture, you find yourself right in the midst of change:
Gentrification reached this building long ago. Down on the ground floor lies the café-bar
“Kapitalist.” Step inside, and you’ll feel it immediately: This place isn’t about glitz; it’s about
atmosphere. The bar is constructed from salvaged scrap metal, and the interior has a
post-industrial vibe—perfect for transporting you back to another era.
So, you aren’t just looking at a building with a crumbling façade—you are looking at a piece
of Berlin’s history: from the Imperial era through the GDR years to the creative present.
And that is precisely what makes this place so special.
