Berlin, February 1989. The Wall still stands, yet the GDR is beginning to totter. Many
people dream of freedom—including 20-year-old Chris Gueffroy. He
believes that the order to shoot at the border has been rescinded. A fatal error.
Chris grew up in East Berlin. Because he refused to join the army, he was
barred from attending university and becoming a pilot. The young man felt
trapped and marginalized—and he wanted out. Together with his friend Christian, he
hatched a risky plan: to secretly cross the Wall into the West.
On the night of February 5–6, 1989, the two men snuck into a
community garden allotment in Treptow, situated right along the border. They cleared the initial
obstacles—but just before reaching the final fence, they were spotted. Border guards
opened fire. Chris was struck by a fatal shot. He died right there in the
border strip.
Chris Gueffroy was the last person to be shot dead at the Berlin Wall—
just a few months before the Wall fell. Today, a photograph located here—along the former
course of the Berlin Wall on Bernauer Straße—serves as a memorial to his
courage and his tragic death.
