Right in the heart of the vibrant city—surrounded by the roar of traffic and the perpetual dust of the metropolis—lies a hidden, truly unique elevation: Mont Klamott.
Just imagine: this is where the band Silly once belted out the song that perfectly captures the essence of this very spot. As early as 1968, Wolf Biermann sang of “Springtime at Mont Klamott”—and in 1973, a scene for the iconic GDR cult film The Legend of Paul and Paula was even filmed right here.
But that is far from all: Did you know that, buried deep within this “mountain,” lies a former World War II flak tower? Immediately after the war, plans were made to demolish these massive defensive towers—but the demolition attempt failed. Instead, the rubble from the destroyed city was simply piled up around and over them. Thus was born the 78-meter-high “Bunker Mountain”—a site that today scarcely resembles a mountain at all, having become densely overgrown and blanketed in trees.
And as Silly so aptly sang: “There, on the weekend, we air out our lungs in the breeze…”—it is precisely here, atop this mysterious hill, that you can still find peace and fresh air today, right in the middle of the big city. Mont Klamott and the adjacent Volkspark Friedrichshain form a green oasis—a place to catch your breath for young and old alike.
