In the 1880s William Dawe had a house and greengrocer’s shop on the corner where Sussex Street becomes Skipton Road. This business was later run by his sons Thomas and John. For a short time from 1901, R S Nelson (the younger, a grandson of William Dawe) ran his undertaker’s business from the Dawe’s shop.

John Dawe was also caretaker of the Linton Acetylene Gas Plant and the Linton Waterworks. In about 1911 he also opened a shop in Denison Street, near the railway station.

John Dawe’s son, Bert Dawe, was evidently known as “Possum Dawe” as he had the job of climbing poles to light the town’s gas lamps at night.
