The building at 80 Sussex Street dates from the 1860s when John and Jane Treloar are recorded as operating a greengrocery and confectionery store here. Henry Nicholls ran a general store here until his death in 1889, and it remained in the Nicholls family until 1906. Much of the fruit, and many of the jellies and jams sold in the shop at this time originated in their home garden at ‘Sutton Grange,’ a property on the outskirts of Linton, which was accessed from Clyde St near the pumping station.
J H. Morgan bought the shop in 1906 and ran it until 1930. Originally from Glasgow, Morgan already had stores in Smythesdale and Skipton. He retired in 1930 and his son, Harold Morgan, took over until 1956. In turn, Harold’s son Selwyn managed it until 1964 (see photo), when it was sold to Wilhelm Verdoorn The Verdoorn family, father and sons, were the proprietors of a grocery store here until 2008.
In 2010 it became an earlier era-style country store, selling groceries and second hand ‘collectables.’ More recently it has been a café in various guises, and is now a private residence.
