The first Methodist Church opened here on March 11, 1860, and the first wedding took place in June. Following the first Government survey of the new town, Sussex Street was widened, and the church was moved to Grantley St in 1861.
Joseph Shepherd, Grenville Shire Councillor 1870-1915, had a shop and dwelling at this site from the 1860s. The building was completely destroyed by fire in 1896, and was replaced shortly afterwards by this house, and the double-storey brick shop next door at 74 Sussex St.
This house has undergone significant renovation since the 1890s, and little remains of the original building apart from the chimney and some internal architectural detail.
After Joseph Shepherd died in 1921 the house became a shop and tearooms, before reverting to a private residence.
