On August 8th, 1945, Crown Prince Olav unveiled this memorial during the first royal visit. It honors 23 Norwegians, 2 Brits, and 1 Swede who lost their lives defending Svalbard during World War II. Among them were 15 casualties when ships Selis and Isbjoern sank near Barentsburg and 9 during the German attack on Longyearbyen in 1943. Two more died in attacks on a German weather station. Captain Trond Astrup Vigtel is the only one buried in Longyearbyen, as families chose to bury others on the mainland. Evacuation in 1942 spared further casualties.
