Not all of the Longyearbyen Safe Zone is marked by the Polar Bear sign. A small bridge towars the airport signifies its limits, forbidding departure without a rifle for protection. Despite this restriction, there’s much to explore in safe areas.
The view toward the airport offers glimpses of the past and present. The inactive coal cable car and its harbor, with coal piles limited to prevent self-ignition, showcase the town’s history. Hotelneset, serving medium-sized expedition cruise ships, features rows of containers used for various storage purposes. Behind it, the Airport tower marks the International Airport, with roads leading to the Global Seed Vault and Mine 3, both accessible through guided tours.
