To the right near the intersection with Gascoigne’s Road is a cleared paddock. This was the site of the mining township of Standard Lead. Following the discovery of gold in this area in 1859, a populous, short-lived community sprang up here. Within months it evidently had a population of about 4000, with several stores and a number of hotels and shanties having been erected. However, as with many of the early gold fields, the claims were quickly worked out and the population moved on. The two-storey Royal Standard Hotel, which stood here on the southern side of the Mortchup Road, was removed to Sussex St, Linton, in about 1860.

Continue under the rail bridge that once carried the Linton to Skipton rail line, to the Reservoir on the left.
