In Longyearbyen’s early days, it operated as a company town, and land ownership was prohibited until the Svalbard Treaty of 1920. The Norwegian State company, Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani (SNSK), owned infrastructure and managed the town. To ensure provisions for employees, including fresh meat, a pigsty was established. However, harsh conditions made pig farming impractical, and shipping pre-packaged meats became cost-effective. The pigsty was repurposed into a storage facility, still in use today.
