Longyearbyen’s small hospital provides primary and specialist healthcare, offering outpatient services like dentistry, walk-in clinics, and minor surgeries. For severe cases, medical flights to mainland hospitals can be arranged, crucial for Svalbard’s emergency preparedness. The hospital has six in-patient beds, including an intensive care unit with a ventilator and one for isolation during infections.
However, due to the absence of a midwife, pregnant patients must leave for the third trimester, returning after the child is deemed “fit to fly.”
