Located at the base of a trestle from John Munroe Longyear’s first mine, Mine 1a, known as the “American Mine,” stands a memorial to commemorate Longyearbyen’s founding father. Crafted by Tor Schmedling, the memorial plaque was funded by the Norwegian Government and unveiled by Janetta M. Longyear, the founder’s granddaughter, on the settlement’s 100th anniversary, June 10, 2006.
