My name is Michelle and I love horses. I have been riding and showing horses since I was 12. I am now almost sixty! I have owned eight horses and worked with many horses at different barns throughout the lower mainland.
Today you will learn about one of the city’s best kept secrets- Burnaby Horseman’s Association or Burnaby Equestrian Center or just BHA. This non-profit organization was founded in 1968 and has been located on the edge of Burnaby Lake Regional Park since 1971. It is home to up to 59 horses at a time and they all cared for by individual people, a ton of volunteer labor and the members of the club who care for their horses daily. There is no paid staff, everyone pitches in to make everything run smoothly with barn committees and a volunteer board of directors. IT is an excellent model that allows for low costs to keep a horse near the city because owners do all the labor and buy all of their own supplies. It is a private, members only facility.
It’s located on Avalon. If you have ever been on the trails around Burnaby lake and wondered where the horses come from now you know. Today you will meet a charismatic horse that I like to think of as a unicorn. He is curious and playful and funny!
