Alonzo Herndon, Atlanta’s first Black millionaire, sensing there would be trouble in the area, closed up his incredibly successful luxury barber shop on Peachtree Street and sent his employees home early. Herdon and his businesses were a symbol of Black affluence, and their very presence was a threat to the white men who made up the mob. Other barber shops were targeted by the mob as well.
